Urinary Incontinence Treatment

OVERVIEW

Urinary Inconsistence is the loss of bladder control, it is a common problem. This problem becomes severe when urine starts leaking with a cough or sneeze, it can be understood with urge which becomes so sudden and strong. If urinary inconsistence starts affecting daily activities then it becomes an alarming sign to see a doctor.


There are three types of Urinary incontinence

  • Stress incontinence - When leakage of urine happens on coughing, sneezing, laughing or others it is called stress inconsistency, it could happen because of less muscle supporting urethra or obesity.
  • Urge incontinence - Urge incontinence is called when urine leakage happens before reaching to the toilet, this type of incontinence can be noticed in menopause, strokes, Alzheimer and spinal cord injury. It could also happen because of anxiety, hyperthyroidism or uncontrolled diabetes.
  • Overflow incontinence - This type of leakage happens when urinary bladder become weak. General reasons for this incontinence are bladder outflow obstruction or neurological cause as childbirth defect, multiple sclerosis.

  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Chocolates
  • Foods which are high in spice, sugar or acidic
  • Heart and blood pressure medications, sedatives and muscle relaxants
  • UTI
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Being female, elderly age, being overweight, smoking or tobacco usage, and family history of Urinary Incontinence also considered as risk factors.
Symptoms
  • Urine leakage by coughing, laughing, exercising, or lifting something.
  • Sudden and intense urge to urinate
  • Frequent or constant dribbling of urine.
  • Functional incontinence
  • Often Urination even in the night

Stress incontinence
Kegal’s exercise - This exercise helps to strengthen the pelvic floor and it helps to prevent urine leakage while laughing, coughing, lifting and others.
Vaginal Sling - If there is no improvement with Kegal's exercise then your doctor may prescribe you vaginal sling surgery.

Urge incontinence - Anticholinergic medicines are given to patients for control of urge inconsistency. These medicines have some side effects like dryness of mouth or constipation.

Overflow incontinence - This inconsistence can be treated on the basis of reason, as if there is a blockage in urinary passage then surgery is the possible solution, if bladder muscle is weak due to neurological or long-standing obstruction than medicines or permanent catheterization is required.
